The giant Antonov 225, a 291ft - long Russian plane, originally designed to transport the soviet space shuttle. This £14 million aircraft is carrying four 10m Delta RIBs from Manchester Airport, on June 17th.

They are needed urgently by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to patrol the coast and tighten security in the Middle East. Charles Dyas, managing director of Delta Power which builds boats for the likes of scuba divers, police, fire service and HM customs, explained: “Our fast RIB boats will be used for oil terminal security and rescue duty in the Middle East. “The boats were built in

record time – just 12 weeks – to answer immediate concerns." He added: “The Antonov transport plane has been hired to air-freight the boats. In our 25-year history, we have never done anything like this before. It is a once in a lifetime experience to see this plane in Manchester.

“Only two of the original Antonov 225s were ever built, and only one ever took to the air.“ Sea trials for the boats have been successfully carried out in Liverpool over the past few days. And Delta is hoping that they will receive more contracts like this one in the future.
