Neil Elam, one of our American HotRIBsters, callsign 'sirzap', recollects fond memories of his great achievement in circumnavigating Great Britain.
 
  " airlifted by the Coastguard ... "

A crewmember on Sir Charles Blois's boat is airlifted by the Coastguard with a suspected heart attack. A 210 mile distance today and the last 20 miles across the wash of the Thames was the longest 20 miles of the entire trip.

Several boats are spread along the East Coast choosing to put in early to wait for better conditions. Ramsgate's quay is a welcomed site for sure.

All crews assemble at Ramsgate's Royal Yacht Club for dinner and a final briefing of the final run to Portsmouth tomorrow. By now everyone sports the wind burned cheeks and noses and looks pretty funny. It's a little hard to believe that tomorrow is already the last day.

5 June 1998 - Ramsgate to Portsmouth

A short run of only 120 miles for the last leg. We are happy to have Becky Shaw join us for this run to Portsmouth.

We are greeted in the morning with winds blowing Force 5 from the Southwest producing one last run straight into the wind and waves; it was going to be a wet day. But the sun was shining and we were in great spirits as we said our good-byes to Ramsgate.It was a beautiful run, seeing the white Cliffs of Dover, the green hills of Beachy Head, and the welcomed site of our final destination Portsmouth.

Neil enjoys an English beer after completing his first Circumnavigation of Britain		  

Eight days, 1610 nautical miles, 95 hours at sea, we pop our bottle of champagne and toast our run round Britain.

We gather again at the Bridge Tavern where everyone meets up with family and friends and several pints to begin our celebration for a job well done.

Many thanks to Alan Priddy and Sterile Technologies of Ireland for organizing this event and to John Kennett for inviting me to be a part of this incredible adventure. I'm a confirmed RIBster for life now and can't wait to begin my own raids in the USA.
