EURIB - Pordenone to Grado Page 3/7

Our first evening was spent investigating the many busy open air restaurants the harbour area has to offer, and then deciding what to choose from the wonderful selection of freshly caught fish.

Not an easy task!

Aquileia - The following morning a short RIB trip took us to the remains of one of the biggest cities of the Roman Empire, Aquileia, just a few kilometres from Grado. Here we were met by a guide who explained the history of Aquileia while taking us on a very interesting tour. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the old river harbour, warehouses from Aquileia's days as a busy Roman port and markets where precious spices from the Orient were sold. The tour ended with a visit to the beautiful basilica of Aquileia, with   its mosaic floor dating back to the 4th century and its ceiling in the shape of a boat's hull, constructed ten centuries later.
