| Aquileia
- The following morning a short RIB trip took us to the remains
of one of the biggest cities of the Roman Empire, Aquileia, just
a few kilometres from Grado. Here we were met by a guide who explained
the history of Aquileia while taking us on a very interesting tour.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered the old river harbour,
warehouses from Aquileia's days as a busy Roman port and markets
where precious spices from the Orient were sold. The tour ended
with a visit to the beautiful basilica of Aquileia, with |
|
its mosaic floor dating
back to the 4th century and its ceiling in the shape of a boat's
hull, constructed ten centuries later.
